Engaging under resourced parents in schools

This is the beginning phase of rearing healthy children.  Encouraging under resourced parents to take a pro active stand in the daily dynamics of their child's life is difficult but possible.  Therapist and agencies should use a holistic approach in designing interventions to engage difficult parents.  Assessments should addresss support systems, pathology, evironmental components, community resources, and assessibility to professionals.

Parents should co-chair the team of professionals working with their child.  Bashing, humiliating, and focusing on a parents poor parenting skills won't make them PTA president.  However, providing parents with a peer parent networking system may engage the parent and increase positive visibility in their child's school and life.

Schools have so many programs targeting parental involement and it's disheartening when 2-3 parents show at PTA.  Parents come with an entourage to school  to clear suspensions and ready to fight the school staff..
